Someone posted in the current events thread that there are rumors that starting in May, spousal income will be factor into IDR plans.

Is this actually true? Should I never get married?

Is the MFS vs MFJ rule changing?

Wait this would be huge if true… I’ve been putting off proposal plans partly because of this exact worry

My understanding was that MFS lets you keep spouse income separate for IDR calculations but if they’re changing that then marriage basically becomes a financial penalty for anyone with loans. Really hoping this is just rumors because that timing would mess up a lot of people’s life plans

    2. you shouldn’t avoid marriage due to student loans. you lose so many legal protections for yourself and that other person. not only that, but if your SO gets hospitalized, youre not allowed into their room unless youre married. not only that but once you’re married, your finances are combined and you can clean up your unmanageable student loans faster.

gay people didn’t fight for the right to get married for fun, it has undeniable benefits
