Insurance companies don’t threaten to report you to the DMV. They are required to WARN you that they automatically report your policy as canceled to the DMV, and in some states there are very heavy penalties tied to that.
As for the Short Rate Cancel, it’s somewhat uncommon, but it’s almost guaranteed in North Carolina. I’m sorry you were hit with an unexpected bill, I wish there was more awareness about what a short rate cancel fee is, or just do away with it honestly. Maybe one day.
