I spent the first 10 years out of college totally mismanaging my money while struggling to Kickstart a career. as a result, I have no savings, living paycheck to paycheck, and have accrued some debt I wish I hadn't.

I work as an independent contractor, making ~$30 hr before taxes, and while I am working on climbing out of owing, im still taking on more water than I can with interest.

I'm considering asking my family to help pay off some of these debts so that I stop paying those crushing APRs, and instead offer to repay them + a fair interest over the course of a year. it's an uncomfortable thing for me to ask, but i am confident i will receive help to alieviate at least some of this mess. I want to come to the table prepared with an offer and understanding that I will take this seriously.

So I'm looking for some advice as to what a fair offer would be if I wanted a $7k loan from my family with the expectation to pay it back in full + X% interest within a year, and what else i can do to be more thorough?

    currently, I have:

    CC debt:

    $3,000 @ 25% Apr

    $3,000 @ 27.5% apr

    $500 @ 25% apr

    $500 @ 27.5% apr

    $800 @ 29% apr

+ about $7k total in back taxes with the IRS across 3 years. I have accrued about $1000 in interest from this, and currently have a payment plan of $200/month towards this.

I'm otherwise working on turning around this trajectory, eliminating bad spending habits, and managing my income more appropriately.

    thank you so much!

    1. It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to pay off a $7K (and certainly not $15K) loan within a year when you’re currently living paycheck to paycheck.

Be careful about proposing terms you won’t be able to fulfill.

Start by just talking to them. Tell them about your struggles and your plan to turn them around.

Depending on their own financial situation, they might just gift it to you. It’s what I would do, especially since the chances of getting repaid anytime soon seem low.
