I’m thinking about applying for the Citi Custom Cash Card, but I’m a little unsure how Citi views recent inquiries.

I recently opened a new mortgage, and in total I have 9 inquiries in the last 24 months, 8 in the last year, and 3 in the last 6 months. Of those 3, one is for the mortgage, and the other two are from Citi pulling my credit twice in December (same application, just ended up with two hard pulls when they denied me).

My Experian score is currently 781.

Does Citi typically treat mortgage inquiries any differently, or are they just counted the same as everything else? And given those stats, do I realistically have a shot, or should I wait a bit before applying again?

Mortgage pulls usually get treated separately by most lenders since they’re for different purpose, but Citi can be pretty unpredictable with their approval criteria. With 781 score you’re definitely in good territory, but those two recent Citi pulls from December might work against you – they sometimes have internal rules about reapplying too soon after denial.

Maybe wait few more months to put some distance between the December denial and new application? Your score is solid but Citi seems to care more about recent inquiry activity than some other issuers.
