Hey everyone, I had a question about auto insurance and address/garaging.
I recently filed a collision claim. It was a hit and run. During the process I realized my insurance address wasn’t updated to my current city. I’ve moved a couple times over the past few years and updated my license and registration each time, but didn’t realize I needed to separately update my insurance address.
I’ve since updated it with my insurer.
I’m not trying to hide anything or do anything shady. I genuinely didn’t know this was something that could affect coverage.
My questions are:
How big of an issue is this typically?
Is this something that could affect my claim?
What do insurance companies usually do in situations like this?
Would appreciate any insight, especially from anyone who works in insurance or has dealt with something similar.
Forgot to update garaging address before claim, what should I expect?

It is very possible that they will deny your claim.
You sort of have to wait and see. It is entirely possible that your claim will be denied.
So for years you have had the wrong information on your insurance?
They are going to deny this claim. A few months could be looked over. Multiple moves over multiple years reeks of rate evasion.
Theyre going to run a premium difference. If it’s material then they’ll investigate. Be ready to prove that you were at the address during the timeframe of your policy. But it all depends on how strict your carrier is with the “update us within 30 days of any policy changes” part of your contract.
