So l'll be honest, I fucked up and I completely forgot last year to file my taxes for 2025. At the time I had a freak accident and was on bed rest for quite a while due to my injury back in early 2025 so I completely forgot. Anyways fast forward to today, I got a voicemail allegedly by a tax consultant stating that they are reaching out to me about my missed filings, (I'm assuming it's a scam but idk) and putting me on some sort of relief program so it scared me.

Anyways I never got around to doing it and I'm now concerned if I'm fucked. To put things into prospective on my financial situation l am a junior enlisted active duty troop in the Military, so I'm not swimming in dough. I'm going to look into it once the business week opens up, I currently can't because everything is closed on Sunday.

I'm an active duty troop, I missed last years tax season and I'm concerned…

    1. If you don’t owe anything, you’re completely fine. If you do owe taxes, it’s not going to get better with time.

Do this year and last year’s taxes asap

First off take a deep breath you’re not going to jail. You probably don’t owe and if that’s the case no harm no foul. If for some reason you do owe you just owe the taxes plus some penalties. You can set up a payment plan with the IRS as well. Lesson learned. Move on from it and now you know better.

If a “tax consultant” called you saying they were “putting you on” a relief program, and you didn’t do anything to initiate that, then that’s 100% a scam.

Unless you manually adjusted your tax withholdings and got a bunch of stock dividends coming in and a massive high yield savings account and rental property income, odds are you are *owed* a refund, not that you *owe* any taxes.

What you need to do is just go ahead and prepare your state and federal tax returns. Odds are as I said you are due a refund, which means you will get money back. When this happens, you are not penalized at all by the IRS. You are only penalized for filing late if you actually *owe* money to the government.

Just file your tax returns, sounds like you’re young so you probably don’t owe anything and there won’t be any penalties. You’ll probably get a refund. You can file your own using freetaxusa or H&Rblock through MilTax

    5. You definitely need to file. Go to a local H&R Block and say you need to file 2025 taxes. Not filing can impact things like security clearances. Just go get it done. (And 2026 if you haven’t already)

    6. I did this once, then I learned that you can’t file current years taxes without filing previous years taxes. 4 years later, I paid a tax guy to help me out lol. Turns out, if you don’t owe, there is no penalty. If you do owe, you are racking up late fees.
