    1. A few of my coworkers are on food stamps; some of the work requirements just seem counterproductive. Like, they’re making them work 1 day a month doing BS busy work to receive food stamps in the amount of what they would make in a day.

I feel like it’s fucking bull shit to make people who need it the most, to jump through hoops like that.

There is a way to satisfy the work requirement if you can volunteer for a non profit like a church, animal shelter for example , it would qualify you to still receive FS. I only know about this because here in Arizona a person I know does this to maintain compliance.

Did you know that people from poor nations are shorter? This is largely due to the lack of nutrients.

Did you know that about 58% of Fortune 500 CEOs are 6 feet or taller? This is not a coincidence.

It’s a vicious cycle that we are trapped in; this country is not a meritocracy.

I’m on food stamps now, lost my job recently. When I started there over a year ago I was on foodstamps then too, but once I had paying work I stopped relying on government assistance immediately.

We have many problems, we’ve outsourced everything from manufacturing to call centers, to the point where my career experience of 8+ years as a sysadmin with some manufacturing experience is not a good fit for the local Taco Bell. I applied anyway but no response thus far. Showed up in person, all that jazz.

There’s just no way out, no path to success, no way to work hard and someday get a house.

We don’t reward hard workers, we don’t pay laborers enough and we reward corruption.

I saw a thread today about how short people are twice as likely to kill themselves. It seems irrelevant but it’s not. Things are going to get worse for the poor, with the way we treat people for being homeless. Not having straight teeth for example, not having a car. I applied to a few jobs today that specifically asked if I had my own car or would use public transportation; these aren’t driving jobs either, they just want to weed out applicants who come from impoverished backgrounds.

Our nation is deeply flawed at the moment and no one in charge is doing anything but making it worse.

    4. I oppose work requirements for two main reasons: 1) Here in the US we’ve never seen them actually result in increased employment (see Arkansas in 2018/19) and 2) The cost of implementing and ongoing administration of these work requirements is more expensive than if we just left people alone.

Society conveniently acting like jobs are plentiful and easy to get, just to mask its hostility for the poor.

And people really think that they won’t end up on the other side, until they do when a corporation decides to axe them…

Every none wage based pressure to work, is a pressure that lowers wages of workers. Work requirements for food stamps, lowers wages.

Oh man what a shock. As it turns out, some people live in areas that literally have no jobs lol. Even worse, some of those jobs pay so little that being hired nets you less than you’re getting from unemployment while you search for a job that pays similar to what you were making.

If the government(s) were really concerned, what they should be doing is offering work-for-welfare options for those who are able bodied.

We built the Hoover damn like this and have plenty of other projects that could be completing with willing labor participants that want a descent living and are in areas with little to no work to be had.
