I thought the same when I compared my investment vs roth. But its not apples to apples comparison. you (most likely) placed all money in roth in one lump sum at or close to beginning of last year, at low market prices and it grew from that. Whereas you keep contributing to your investment at all times in the year at growing stock prices over the bull run, so averages will be much lower. if you continued to contribute towards your roth, it would have lesser gains as well.
