Is Canton a Real Blockchain? Yuval Rooz, Alex Gluchowski & Haseeb Qureshi Debate

Canton Network claims to be the first public, permissionless blockchain for institutions — with DTCC, Goldman Sachs and DRW behind it. Critics say it’s a permissioned incumbents’ club with a token. Canton co-founder Yuval Rooz defends the network against Matter Labs’ Alex Gluchowski and Dragonfly’s Haseeb Qureshi in a debate moderated by Laura Shin.

    1. He cannot make claims that they are public open access chains…… it might have similar risks such as Base L2 on ETH …… having a centralized sequencer…… but it is not the same as Solana not even close…….. maybe he could compare to BNB or SUI but not like Solana

    2. Canton is just a different use-case with different trade-offs that work better for institutions who need control of the technical roadmap and assets it governs (securities, not permissionless bearer assets like Bitcoin, ETH, etc). Retail users need higher decentralization guarantees so they will use ETH and Solana, institutions need control so they will use Canton.

    3. If Yuval was less of a prick, hadn't worked on wall street for most of his career and had he not secured partnerships with a large swath of tradfi institutions – which looks like some sort of behind the scenes deal making with established old guard players – out of the blue, he would generate more trust. Sadly, he comes off as an ungracious jerk. The blockchain movement is focused on a more democratic financial system. We are sick of the old guard. They are corrupt. The suspicion is warranted.

    4. the level of obfuscation by Yuval here is impressive. obviously canton is not permissionless and describing it as a blockchain is ridiculous. but it doesn't really matter: they are providing a service to their backers (GS etc) and the last thing the backers want is a decentralised network enforcing their financial contracts by consensus.

    5. Sorry Laura, you should have not intervened. I wanted that answer… for once that there was a really interesting thing you go and cut it? Pfff
