As the title says, I'm going to be living in a tent for this long to save up to go travelling around Asia at the end of the year. It's going to be hard, but I have a lot of mental resilience. I'm starting a 9-5 job and plan to save up as much money as possible before I go. Apart from a tent, are there any essential items you need? Has anyone here stayed in a tent for a similar duration of time?

27M. Staying in a tent for 7 months to go travelling around Asia for 1 year. Has anyone else lived in a tent?

Don’t get fired from your job because you’re living in a tent. Honestly it sounds like a terrible idea

Where are you going to take care of your personal hygiene? How will you cook? What is the climate where you live and will you manage the times when you sit alone in your tent and wonder why you had such an idea? It will be rough seriously.

Do you have access to wash/ toilet/ kitchen/laudery facilities? What will the weather be like?

I wouldn’t do this unless I am about to starve. You seem to do this in order to travel, so it is not even to afford a basic necessity.

I need to be presentable to keep a job and also be rested enough to perform well. So I need to not sleep in a tent.

    7. Is your new employer aware of your upcoming travel accommodations?

      What type of 9-5?

As others have stated, how will you be handling basic hygiene and eating etc?

    9. Where in Asia? Renting a room might be a better choice depending on the location.

that’s a wild plan, props to you. definitely get a solid sleeping bag, a good camp stove, and don’t forget a portable charger for your phone. also, some water purification system could save you a lot of hassle. good luck!

I used to work with the homeless. Tent life is rough. There’s no hygeine facilities, no way to hang or iron clothes to be appropriately dressed for work, no way to cook when it’s rainy, no bathroom (you absolutely will not be welcome at any local business to use their facilities), no power, and everything you own will smell musty or become moldy.

Tents are unsafe AF. No way to lock up your valuables, no way to lock your door, very little protection from the elements. Every time you come “home” you get to wonder if someone has stolen all your things, if an animal has decided to nest in your tent (or piss on it), if the wind has blown it away, or if the cops have taken it down. Every night you get to play the game of “will I get murdered or raped or robbed?”

Permanent residents aren’t welcome in campgrounds. It’s illegal to just pitch a tent in the woods. Homeless encampments are chaotic and violent. You can’t live on land that isn’t zoned for it.

You’ll have no way to store and prepare food. Keeping food in a tent isn’t safe as it attracts big animals like bears, mid sized stuff like skunks, vermin like mice and rats, and bugs.

It’s almost impossible to maintain employment when you live in a tent.

This sounds like a little kid that’s “running away” with a small suitcase and not a clue where they are going or how they’ll get by.

I used to day dream about backpacking all over while stopping to work to afford the fantasy.  While not impossible it’s very unrealistic without funds already saved up .

I have a full time job with a small amount of PTO and I can’t even afford a weekend trip away.

How you’re going to manage to save up enough to travel and work a 9-5 while choosing to live in a tent is beyond me.

So you are living in a tent to save money? I don’t recommend this. If you want to travel around Asia for a year, I do recommend that. The way I did it, was I got a teaching job in Asia. That way I was able to save money and see a lot of things.
