For reference i currently have a waterboss 900 on the side of my house under a grill tarp. The unit is 5 years old and has issues.

I was quoted $2500 for a company to come with their filter and a bonus charcoal filter(sounds like an upsell?)

Now i'm more then comfortable taking off the old water connections and dropping in a softner and plugging it in. That is pretty much it right? The one thing i don't know is which softner or company. This will be outside so preferably one that comes with its own cover i'm fine buying since i won't be paying the 2500 company to come install.

I will say also 2500 for a ten year warranty on the installed one sounds tempting, where if anything were to go wrong i would just have to make a call. Thoughts?

Water softeners better to have warranty or better to save money and diy?

    1. Water softeners are very simple and reliable devices. There is only one little valve that rotates to fill and drain the beads. Maybe your beads go bad over time or the circuit board blows? Such simple devices.

I replaced the one that came with my house some 20 years ago. I think I bought it from Sears for $500. (Could they cost $1,500 now?) It’s worked just fine ever since – and I’ve got very chewy water that stresses the beads.

I don’t waste money on warranties. If they charge 20% for a warranty. I can avoid buying a warranty for five devices that will finance one of them breaking. I do not have a 1 in 5 failure rate within the first couple years – or even 10. Also, half the time they find some excuse to not cover the warranty or to give you pro- rated payout that is worth nothing. Maybe a reliable company like Sears decides to go bankrupt!
