Key Points

    • Google is dedicating a chip to running artificial intelligence models, and a separate processor to training models.
    • Amazon is pursuing a similar strategy, as both companies take on Nvidia by offering custom-built silicon as an alternative to graphics processing units.
    • Google’s new chip comes with ample static random access memory, like a forthcoming chip from Nvidia.
    • Enterprises like Anthropic and Meta are among the early adopters using this specialized Google Cloud infrastructure to scale their production AI services.

At Google Cloud Next 2026 on April 22, 2026, Google unveiled its eighth-generation Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), splitting the lineup into two specialized chips for the first time: the TPU 8t and TPU 8i. This strategic move targets the growing "agentic era," where enterprises require dedicated hardware for both massive model training and complex, multi-step AI reasoning.

These annoucements are a bit misleading. GOOGL TPU’s aren’t going to mass market and competing with NVDA’s GPU sales. They are proprietary to GOOGL’s public cloud – so you need to be a GOOGL customer and you can only access the resource there. For GOOGL itself, that’s great. They don’t need to pay NVDA a huge markup for GPU’s.

But for other customers, that’s a major downside, in that you’re locked to GOOGL cloud. That’s the benefit of NVDA in that their GPU’s are ubiquitous to hyperscalers and neo clouds. You have full redundancy across clouds and aren’t locked into a single pricing structure.

All of the chips that AMZN and MSFT create internally never beat AMD or INTC – they exist to tackle the lowest performance loads. That’s going to be the same with their AI chips.

DISCLOSURE: Long on AMZN MSFT GOOGL NVDA META – they are “forever” stocks for me.

Why not post the full story and not just the part that promotes your agenda? Like the part about their ongoing partnership and the purchase of all NVDAs Vera Ruben chips.
