I'm working my way out of debt right now. I'm investing in my work's 401k up to the match and a little more but to diversify, I'd like to put some in an IRA. Depending on how things go at work and in life, this may be coming up within the next 6 to 9 months.

I'd prefer to go with a national brand like Edward Jones, Fidelity, etc. But I really don't know which ones are out there anymore and which are suggested or should stay away from.

And I'm asking about this early because I'd need to look at what funds are available to invest in. It was kind of easy at work; I think we have 8 total to choose from so it was easy to pick a diverse set.

Where should I open an IRA? I'm in the US, Texas.

Go with one of big 3 – Vanguard, Schwab or Fidelity. Look for low cost broad market total stock index funds for diversification.
