I was in a car accident back in December, no other car involved, hit black ice and took out a hydro pole. Car was a write-off. Just received a bill from hydro company indicating $5k owed for repairs. States 30 days to pay or goes to insurer. Is there a reason I would pay out of pocket rather than go through insurance company? I assume they should cover although indurance was cancelled shortly thereafter as I no longer had a car. I have since purchased a new one, but assume this would go through previous insurer ( who I was insured with at the time of the accident)?

So.. did you.. pay them? I’m assuming not because why else would you get a bill? How could you not be aware of that? You signed an authorization to repair and promised them payment at some point.
Yes, if you didn’t pay your bill, they want payment. Either you or your insurer will pay. Yes, barring weird circumstances, they will pay for this single vehicle at-fault collision. *As long as* you *did* actually have an active policy with appropriate coverage active. “Canceled [the policy] shortly after” leads me to believe you maybe canceled *before* the damage, in which case there’s no coverage. If you put it in the shop and then canceled your policy for some reason, it should be fine. The dates should check out
