“What's new

3% cash back on dining at restaurants, including takeout and eligible delivery services

    3% on drugstore purchases

5% on travel purchased through Chase Travel

    1.5% on all other purchases

    What won't carry over

5% cash back on quarterly rotating categories

    1% on all other purchases”

I have a 11 year old OG chase freedom card with a $15.6k limit that I can PC to a freedom unlimited, is there any reason not to? I only occasionally use the rotating category’s because they don’t usually apply to me.

I also have a USAA AMEX points card that’s about 2 years old with a $25k limit, a 5 year old clothing store card with a $2.5k limit and am an AU for a 1.5 year old Costco Citi card with a $12.5k limit. I don’t carry a balance on my cards but utilize around $5k a month on them, mostly my AMEX depending on if I have an active card at the time.

*lots of issues with my poor poor AMEX card, BIN attack on bank. Mostly nothing to do with current question, but I do use my chase card more when I’m waiting for a new AMEX card to come each time. I use my AMEX card for all groceries and dining typically because of points, and I’ve replaced my card 3x since January and 6-7x since opening in 2024.

I’m “already approved” for 6 different cards through chase, but not really sure I need *another card* or even how many is considered good to have to begin with.

Any reason not to PC my OG CF to CFU

That 11 year history is valuable for your credit profile, so PC makes more sense than closing it. CFU seems like better fit since you’re not really using the rotating categories anyway.

The 1.5% flat rate will probably earn you more than occasional 5% quarters that don’t match your spending. Plus you keep that long account history and the decent credit limit. Only downside is losing the option to maximize those quarters if your spending patterns change later, but doesn’t sound like that’s likely for your situation.

Miss out on the elevated $250 SUB for $500 spend on the CFU, sometimes with in-branch offers for 5% groceries and gas for the first year. Also, CFU ends up useless in a cashback setup pretty quickly while CF’s rotating categories sometimes can be useful. Might end up PCing right back to a Freedom if you ever get a decent 2% catch-all card
