I'm genuinely curious: where does the interest go?
I don't even want to look at how much I've paid in interest over the life of my loans. The money isn't going to my college(s) so… where is it going?
Ultimately, who's profiting off of this?

No one’s profiting off of this. The servicers make peanuts and any “profit” goes to the government. But the federal student loan system loses money so the taxpayer is on the hook for it.
