    1. PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are taken up by plants from contaminated soil and water, entering the food chain when humans or animals consume them. These “forever chemicals” enter agricultural systems via irrigation, biosolids (sewage sludge) fertilizer, and contaminated water.
