I'm working with a small local dealership over the phone, I'll be flying out soon to purchase a car in person.
The dealer is asking for a photo of the cashiers check to "verify funds" so we don't have to do it on site and everything will be ready to go. This place seems fairly reputable, is this standard practice?

Does not sound safe to me and I have never heard of any dealership ever doing this.
If you left the routing numbers out of the photo, that doesn’t seem particularly dangerous
Generally, yes, provided you are dealing with the actual dealership. Because the check is made out specifically to the dealership’s name, it is very difficult for a third party to do anything with just a photo.
I’ve flown out to buy a car a few times now. This has happened to me before. One time I had the bank actually overnight the check to the dealer so the moment I was there, I could pick up the car.
Taking a photo is ok, it’s not a valid check, not one could print it out. Even write your name over the photo (with your photo editing app) if you worry about that, they are verifying things, covering their but so you can come and take the car.
