I am 37 and have about 170k in my roth Ira, this is after years of maxing it out and it is tough. I am just curious of what other people have saved because if you ask any source they are claiming most Americans my age have A LOT more saved. I think its not true.

How much do Americans REALLY have saved for retirement

Only maxing out your IRA is not going to be enough to sustain almost anyone’s retirement. Do you not have a 401k as well through your job as well?

Checks google… median retirement savings for the 35-44 yr old bucket is 44k… okay OP… okay…

You’re asking Reddit. On here you’ll have 20 year olds telling you they have 2 million in their 401k.

Nah no one is lying bro you’re just way behind, better catch up!

But actually i think that a lot of people claim to have more saved than they actually do, or your sample skews high because people who are doing well are probably more willing to talk about it than someone who is not. I bet the amount of 37-year olds who don’t have a single cent saved would astound you. Keep up the good work.

23 bucks and a bogo coupon for burger king chicken samdwhich and cheese burger, plus 5 dollars off order 20 or more, and about 20k mcdonalds points

36- 200k between Pension and Market account for same employer. Then $100k in my own personal brokerage account. So total $300k.

    7. SHOULD have saved and actually have saved are 2 different things. Most people dont have anything saved and if so its Most likely not much. Youre doing pretty well for yourself. Dont worry about what the internet says. Keep doing what youre doing. You are on the right track

I feel like asking in here isn’t a best feedback.

A quick google will tell you avg amount saved by age range.

Reading here i feel way behind and terrible. Reading actual averages I feel way ahead and in a good spot 🤷‍♂️

    10. You have a Roth so you’ll inherently have less appreciation than most people who typically do pre-tax.

I’m 39 and have $245k, just Roth. I’ve been increasing contributions and now do 50/50 Traditional / Roth. I’d have way more had I not been contributing just 6% for my entire career… But I also wouldn’t have been able to invest in housing.

I’m so confused by this post. You post on an investing sub, the answers will obviously be biased. Also, most surveys say Americans are living paycheck to paycheck.

I’m 48. In a world where Trump wasn’t trying to sabotage the world economy on a daily basis, I would have enough saved for my wife and I to retire in about 5-7 years.

52 $2.5M have been grinding and investing since I was 23, maxed out the 401 for the last probably 10-12 years.

Could you post one of those data sources? I believe you’re lower than average, but ahead of the median amount.

The rule of thumb is to have at least this (goal, not a hard requirement):

      Yearly expenses * age /10

So at 37 in LA you’d need about half a million for a small family.

Responses on here are not reliable. You’d be better off looking at data published from Empower, Vanguard, Bankrate or something like that. Just Google it

    17. I have a friend who makes 200k a year, who is broke.

I have another friend who males 60k a year and is a millionaire

    18. One thing to keep in mind is, intelligently invested, the first 100k is a lot slower than the second 100k. The rate of growth continues to increase as the size of the assets increases.

    19. 34 about to turn 35.

      Retirement accounts – $200K
Taxable brokerage and various checking accounts- $100,000
Various other accounts, probably another $30K-ish
