So I left my old job in October and I had a 401k but I didn’t know how to access it or anything so I just left it there. But then I got an email saying my account got moved to a new provider bc the company is no longer working with them but it doesn’t say where it went? It wasn’t much bc I only started contributing at the beginning of next year but I like my little bundle of saving back so I can start making contributions again. Any idea how to find it?

Where is my 401k from my old job?

Contact HR and they should be able to connect you with the provider.
You can’t contribute anymore if you’re no longer employed there.
But if you have a current job and 401k, you can rollover the old one to the new one, then contribute to the new one.

    2. You call your old job’s HR and ask them.

You can no longer contribute to a prior job 401K, but you can rollover to an IRA or new job 401K and contribute to that.

As others have said, contact HR. You can also try asking an AI “how can I access the 401(k) plan for XYZ company? Who manages the plan?”

Keep in mind, there are rules regarding if you can keep the funds in the original employers plan or if you’re required to transfer (rollover) to an outside IRA. I think if the balance is over $5000 then you are allowed to keep the money with the employers plan. Below 5000 you would need to roll over to a outside IRA. You should have received a notification regarding this.
