At first, Bitcoin felt simple on the surface. You buy it, you hold it, maybe send it somewhere.

But the more I looked into it, the less I felt like I actually understood what was going on.

Wallets, private keys, transactions, I knew the terms, but it all felt disconnected.

I read Crypto for Dummies: A Beginner’s Guide to Bitcoin, Blockchain, and Not Losing Your Mind (or Your Money) recently and it helped way more than I expected.

What it does well is connect everything into one system instead of explaining things separately.

The biggest shift for me was understanding that “owning” Bitcoin really just means controlling the private key. Not having a balance on an app, not trusting an exchange, but actually having control over the key that signs transactions.

Once that clicked, a lot of other things started making sense.

Why self-custody matters, why exchanges are different, and why security (like seed phrases and backups) is such a big deal.

It didn’t make me a better trader or anything like that, but it made me understand what I’m actually interacting with.

And that changes how you think about risk.

If you’re getting into Bitcoin and feel like you understand how to use it but not how it actually works, I’d recommend Crypto for Dummies.

Bitcoin only clicked for me after I understood this
