With the vast majority of us living either paycheck to paycheck, or close to it, I wanted to provide a bit of life advice which I've been following since the pandemic:

Always stock powdered milk in your pantry.

I was reminded of why I do it this morning, when I needed milk for my morning coffee, and for my cereal.

We're out of our regular milk, money is a bit tight cause we had some extra bills at the end of last month, and I don't want to dip into our reserves, when I might need it for gas. In the past this would have created a dilemma, but instead, 2 cups of cold water, 1/2 cup of powdered milk, and I have skim milk for today and tomorrow.

While it costs a little bit more than regular milk, where it saves you money is during times like this, cause it's shelf stable for years, and always there when you need it.

Doesn't go to waste either, if you bake, as it's great to add to bread dough to make a softer crumb.

I’ve never successfully mixed up powdered milk that actually tastes like milk. It did end up going to waste in our house.

I bought powdered cream during the lock-down portion of the pandemic though and I found that a lot more useful, even though it has a shorter shelf life.

The shelf stable stuff at dollar tree is great too and tastes way better. I always keep a couple containers on hand.

I undersrand and respect your strategy, but I grew up drinking the stuff inthe 80s and have vowed to never consume it again in my lifetime!

I keep cans of evaporated milk instead of powdered milk. Both are good.

      there is UHT milk too.

just fyi depending on where you live powdered milk can be cheaper than fresh.

      I will add this:

you can also make your oat milk when you are out of milk. 1 measure of oats, 4 of cold water blend for a minute or 2 , strain straight afterward! it’s nice , easy and super cheap!

Nido Whole dry powdered milk is so much better than fat free. I bought it for cooking and usually have some in the fridge along side regular milk. My family has drank the “cooking milk” before and not realized it was powdered milk.

I started using sweetened condensed milk in my coffee out of desparation one morning…I had bought it for a baking project that didn’t happen, and it was the only dairy in my home that day.
Now I buy it by the case because it’s cheaper that way, and I like it a lot better than using the flavored coffee creamers I used to buy.

Won’t help with cereal, but for coffee it came it clutch. 😄
