In March of this year I caught that there was two fraudulent bank accounts attempted to be opened in my name at Bank of Montreal and Ally bank. I immediately took all necessary steps, reported the fraud to the gov site, froze all three major credit as well as put a freeze in Chex Systems.

Today Capital One notified me that a 360 savings account had been opened in my name to my gmail address. It prompted me to fund the account.

No pull had been reported to Chex Systems, Capital One told me I should do what I have already done – freeze credit with the big three and put a freeze Chex Systems – but they NEVER used any of those before opening the account. I cannot find a hard or soft pull anywhere across those!

Capital One also placed me on hold for over 45 minutes in 15 min increments when I requested to verify the account had been closed. They need their fraud investigation unit to look into it – but refused to collect info or give me any idea on how they would communicate with me when they said they would be in touch. When I asked how they would send it to me, she placed me on hold again for a long amount of time and only then asked my preference – email or mailing address?

I STILL have not gotten letters from the other two banks from March that this has been resolved. Its a nightmare!

Why doesn't Capital One follow their own best practice of using a verification system for their bank accounts that will report on and hit the freeze in place recommended by themselves and the government: Chex Systems?

If I did not get emails that these accounts were opened to my gmail (why do scammers do that? ) and it does not report to the credit agencies or Chex systems, or hit the freeze – how do I possibly protect myself?

Capital One fraudulent banking account opened despite freezes across all recommended systems.

    1. File a police report and an FTC report. Then call Capital One’s fraud line directly, not general support. Also add a fraud alert to your credit. Freeze Innovis and NCTUE too, those are smaller bureaus. This sucks. I’m sorry.

    2. are we sure that this: new account opened plese fund……..isnt a scam itself?

    3. You should find out if Capital One actually opened an account…

Also unless they extend some form of credit to this account these kinds of accounts tend to be low risk for the bank.

The bank doesn’t actually care about how annoying this is for you their only concern is losing money when someone leverages your identity to get access to it.
