I am a Canadian citizen who worked in the US from 2009 to 2019 with a TN Visa. I will most likely retired in Canada. Am I eligible for SS? I also have an IRA account in the US. What are my retirement benefits and Social Security?

    1. If you worked at least 40 quarters, you’ll get SS. How much? Only the SSA knows. Create an account on the website to see your estimate.

You lose your Social Security benefits as a non-US citizen if you live outside the US for more than six months.

Well, assuming you have the credits yes.. but that isn’t a good thing for you. Some time ago Canada changed the law, and for every dollar you bring in from the USA after exchange, is deducted from your Canadian Old Age Security. It is basically a penalty for leaving to go make your life better. On the flip side my Grandpa worked for Dow Chemical in Sarnia Ontario his whole career, and because he was frugal and had investments
.. Canada decided he could not have his old age pension anyway and redirected it to others that didn’t put away for themselves. So not getting what you put in, is the common theme or being punished for trying to do for yourself. I say this as a Canadian that left for the USA and will never go back to Canada.

    4. Step 1. Create a login with soc sec to see your work history. It will show you if you have enough history to qualify. Be sure to change the anticipated future income to 0, so that it doesn’t Thu j you’re still paying in. This will GIVE you a good estimate re “how much.” Step 2, figure out the agreements between us/canada re payments to the respective systems, and how all that works
