I hear a lot of people thinking about switching to an EV because high gas prices have everyone thinking about it ..
But whether it's actually the frugal move comes down to three things and its not range anxiety like everyone assumes.
Buy used: EV prices have dropped significantly. A used EV eliminates most of the upfront premium and is where the real frugal case lives. Search for off-lease EVs specifically those are coming out this year and the next.. and they've already taken the big depreciation hit and are priced much more reasonably..You can get an used one under <25K
Home charging access if you have a garage or dedicated parking and can install a L2 charger, you're in a great position. Public charging only makes the math much harder and depends on how you charge
Most Important, thing, Know your mileage and match your charging setup this is the part most people miss:
- Under 45 miles/day: a standard wall outlet is enough to charge your car…Cause it puts 3-5 miles an hour and you will get 36-52 miles, overnight (12-14 hrs parked)…most people don't think about this part…
- 50–100 miles/day: wall outlet plus occasional fast charging works or L2 charger – nice to have
- 120+ miles/day: a Level 2 home charger is a must
Just putting it out there, so people like us can make better frugal decisions
Thinking about switching to EV to save on gas? It's not a yes/no answer.
