I have been living with my father who was the owner of the home. He had passed away in late June 2025. The home had been left to both me and my sister (living else where). However, in accordance with the probate laws of the state of Massachusetts, my sister and I don't officially take ownership of the home until the one year anniversary of our father's death in late June 2026.
Just recently, I had received a letter in the mail from the company my father had used to insure his house. It stated they would not be renewing the policy when it expires in the middle of June. The reason stated because the property was not owner occupied.
I plan on seeking insurance for the home once I along with my sister take ownership late June. However, I'm not sure what options I have during the two weeks between the termination of the policy and taking ownership of the home. Should I just wait it out and pray there is nothing like a fire or no one gets hurt on the property and sues, or are there any other options in the mean time?
TIA

I would reach out to an agent who can advise the best product for you. Often times the policy that the prior owner had will cover you as long as it is in force, but since they are cancelling then you need to seek the advice of someone familiar with how it works where you are.
