I am trying to rent a car with Hertz (declined Hertz insurance as ive heard that chase will cover) but as reading through the details on chase website, i am confused in what they cover and not. Does anyone know how it works?

The Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Sapphire Reserve have primary auto rental CDW. The Chase Freedom Unlimited… does not. Its coverage is secondary and only kicks in after your personal car insurance has paid out. You should really, really take the time to read the insurance policies you plan to depend on for matters where tens of thousands of dollars could be at stake

Domestically (US) the CFU only provides secondary rental coverage and to activate that you have to pay for the entire rental with it and decline the rental company’s collision/loss damage waiver. So your own auto insurance would have to cover an incident first, and then Chase would step in and cover the rest like the deductible and additional costs not covered by your primary insurance. The only Chase cards with primary rental coverage are Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred, both well-known excellent travel protection cards. I think some of the Chase United cards also provide a form of primary insurance but not sure what exactly.
