I need guidance.
I am a 5th year teacher. 2 years at NON TITLE 1. 2 years AT TITLE 1 teaching 4th grade math. 1 year (current) at TITLE 1 teaching 7th grade math. I understand that my first 2 years do not count towards the teacher loan forgiveness. This next part is where I struggle. I understand that to get the 17,500 you have to teach secondary math or science for 5 consecutive years. The thing that gets me is “highly qualified teacher.” So would I have to work 4 more years instead of 2 to get the 17,500? Is there a “loophole” I guess you could say, to count my first 2 years towards the 17,500?
I do not qualify for PSFL as I have been in IDR review forbearance for 2 years now. I thought those payments went towards it at the time, but I have found out that is not the case. I also do not plan on teaching for 10 more years.
I’m trying to start a family asap which would result in me being a stay at home mom. My fiance & I really would like to be debt free before having kids but another 4 years in education is killing me & I do not want to wait that long to have kids.
I also have 20k in Sallie Mae loans that are a priority as well due to the interest rate.

Before you stop teaching you should investigate whether your state offers any loan forgiveness programs for teachers. Sometimes state based loan forgiveness can be applied to private loans.
In the mean time you should be attempting to refinance private loans at a lower fixed interest rate.
