Chicken drumsticks are .39¢/lb at my local meat market. Whole leg quarters .59¢/lb. Pork is also dirt cheap.
The same cuts of meat that are poorly cut, waterlogged, and sometimes just nasty are nearly 3x as much at the chain grocery I used to buy from.
If you're really on a budget, and get in good with your local butcher/market, they'll even usually sell you their bits and ends for pennies and on dollar.
They make great stocks which can be frozen and used for all kinds of stuff…
Your local meat market/butcher is much cheaper than the chain grocery stores and the product is better quality.

I don’t know. The butchers around me seem to market to a higher brow crowd.
Butcher prices seem to be a full step above what I can get at my local Aldi. That said, the butcher offers more options and I can get higher quality product if I want.
YMMV
Yea, not my experience at all.
Our local butcher is great, and definitely has better quality meats, but it’s way more expensive than the grocery store.
I don’t agree with this. Better quality – MAYBE. Only if the do the slaughtering and the cuts themselves. If they are having most or everything delivered from a large slaughterhouse, then the quality likely won’t make much of a difference.
My frugal tip for meat is visiting ethnic markets. Russian, Eastern-European, Turkisch/Arabic Grocery stores often have a meat counter with fresh meats at cheaper prices.
