I got married in Aug 2025 and filed MFS. I had auto recert checked (stupid) and basically a week after I submitted my taxes I got a notice that my recert application was submitted (a full 4 months before it needed to happen…).
My AGI was $80K and they calculated my payment using a single person household for the poverty line deduction, so my payment is about $475. If my math is right it should be just under $400. I know it doesn't seem like a lot but that $75 would make a big difference for me every month.
When I reached out to point out that they miscalculated they gave me some fake story about how auto recert 'probably' (shouldn't they be speaking in definitive terms?) used my AGI from 2024 when I wasn't a two person household– I've been a two person household since 2019 and my AGI in 2024 was $52k.
So now they're telling me I need to request to have my payments re-calculated which is basically like recertifying and would end my current PAYE plan early to start the new one… My current plan ends in July 2026 and the payment for now is $35. I'm thinking of waiting to recertify JUST before the new PAYE plan starts… But my question is, how can they get away with messing up my calculation and then forcing ME to start paying a higher rate sooner when they made the mistake? Do I have any other recourse?? 😞
Auto Recertification Miscalculated My Payment
