Got a message from DFAS a few weeks back about agency contributions stopping. Followed up with finance and after a lot of back and forth, they discovered I was “erroneously opted-in to BRS”. Timeline: enlisted in NG in 2013, went AD in Jan 2018 with no break in service. I completed the BRS course training, and started receive agency auto contributions later that month and then matching a year later. I received matching and automatic contributions for 8 years after that without issue. A few years later I inquired with finance about why my LES said “choice” instead of “blended”. Three different finance offices told me I’m good to go and it was just a coding issue. Applied for CP last year— again went to finance to clarify I was enrolled in BRS because of the “choice” verbiage. I was approved and paid out CP. Now, six months later finance is saying that I was erroneously enrolled and may have to do hardship enrollment? I’ve been researching how to get the process going but I’m lost here. At this point, I want to stay enrolled in BRS and not have to pay back the CP. I have proof of the auto contributions since 2018 and matching since 2019. I also have the BRS training cert and UTL where finance approved my CP. My local finance office was not much help and told me to google brs hardship. Called dfas and they are saying finance needs to submit a ticket to them. Either way, I’ve submitted an ask DFAS ticket with supporting documentation and I’m waiting now for a response. Is there anything else that I am missing?

    BRS erroneous opt-in?

    1. Did you opt in to BRS? You mention doing the training, but not what your decision was.
