There was a plumbing emergency at my mom’s house. My mom was in the hospital for a little over two weeks immediately after. During that time, my drunk, drug addict, free loading, jobless sister who lives there had plumbers come and do over $10,000 dollars worth of repairs, apparently they dug up the entire front yard and had to replace the main pipe. She did not make an insurance claim or take photos of the damage. Can my mom file a homeowners insurance claim now even though it has been 2.5 weeks and she has no photos of the damage? Or is it too late?

    Thank you

Is it too late to file a claim?

Former field adjuster here. Your mother has a boatload of problems here. No photo and the timing are just the first two. IMO the biggest problem is coverage. There is no way to prove if the cause is even covered. Tons of plumbing issues are not covered by HO insurance, especially ones outside the footprint of the house.

Unless the plumber took video and/or photos before and during repairs I’m afraid there is zero chance for a covered claim. The policy requires the policyholder to give the insurance a chance to inspect the damages to determine coverage and the amount of damages. I’m sorry but I can’t think of a way for her to get coverage. Maybe some one else has an idea. Good Luck.

Do you have information about the company that did the repairs? Do you have any receipts? ANY documentation you can get your hands on, file a claim, and send it to the insurance company.
FL adj here: I’ve been in a similar situation personally, send them proof of your sisters discretions. Tell them you want the claim reviewed and you’d like SIU involved if possible. The more transparent and genuine you are, the better chance you have.

Why would a sewer line outside that probably needed to be replaced warrant an insurance claim?
