I’m feeling discouraged and could use some input
We are selling our home for under our current budget and buying something a bit pricier closer to the area we want to live in. Everyone wants to tour and buy our home already after just listing a few days ago. Our home pretty much has zero issues, new roof, hvac, windows, garage doors, the works. But all of the homes we’ve toured? Awful. So much work needs to be done to every house, or you can tell they recently did shotty work to hide big issues. And they’re asking significantly more than what we are listing for.
I get my home is a little further away thus the price difference, but the comparison is pretty insane. The difference in home prices for the area change isn’t anything astronomical, but everything on the market id spend tens of thousands fixing.
Kind of a rant, but am I being too unreasonable or unrealistic?

They say that the first three rules of real estate are “location, location and location” for a reason.
Your frustration is understandable, but there’s nothing you can do but accept this reality as it has always been this way. It’s the reason you can buy a mansion in Kansas for the $800,000 price tag that it would cost you to own a run down 2br/1ba in many parts of California.
If you want the convenience of living closer to your preferred area this is part of the cost.
Good luck though, I hope you find something you like.
not unreasonable or unrealistic, but probably impatient.
Yes. You should’ve figured this out before putting your house on the market.
Your assessment of the current situation in home buying and selling is spot on. And this is not dependent on geography. Any homeowner who has been properly taking care of their property will be hard pressed to sell their home to move to something equal or better without coming up with lots of money and/or prepared to do a lot of work. This is one reason why many choose to stay put.
We down graded BIG TIME to move to the coast. I completely understand what you’re saying. For us, quality of life was more important to us than the house. We had a single story home on a large lot with a beautiful salt water pool and spa and lush landscaping. We upgraded the heck out of that house too. Now we are in a townhome. Granted it’s the same size of our home was inland but it’s two story (and I have health issues) and basically has a glorified patio for a backyard. We have to walk our dogs several times per day for their exercise (no ball chasing in the yard). But we have never regretted our decision. We sold that house and a beach condo to buy this place and spent twice as much as our inland home. We did remodel some things prior to moving in but not nearly to the extent of our last house. Quality of life matters. 😘
Yes, this has always been the reality.
Price can very dramatically because 2 identical home is only few blocks away, I noticed that when I was looking for house 2 years ago.
I came to the realization I am just a Poor servant class in the modern world.
