Hi all,

I have the typical CSP + CFU combo as my two credit cards right now, but I haven't opened a new card in ~2 years and I think its time to work towards a new SUB or just get another card in general since I only have those 2.

I've been considering a couple options, Amex Gold, Citi Strata Premier, or potentially the CSR for the limited time 150k SUB, or Venture X to really crack the travel card barrier. Just wondering if it makes sense to diversify now, and what happens to the base I've built in the Chase ecosystem if I were to open a card in a different system.

As for spending habits, I would say I spend the most on Dining and Grocery, so the Gold could make sense. I've also been traveling more frequently now that I am more easily able to do so!

Is Amex Gold really the next best card for me?

    1. Chase doesn’t have any cards with a good groceries multiplier. Might be worth getting a Citi custom cash card for 5% back on $500 of groceries each month. You can continue using CSP for restaurants and travel and CFU as a catch all. If you can justify the Amex gold annual fee, go for it but sometimes the extra 1% in dining isn’t worth it.

    2. ElderberryStandard67 on

I have the Amex Gold as my main card the 1x on everything really doesnt bother me all that much. Cause to me all the other benefits/credits are worth more to me than that

    3. A lot of people with the Chase setup use the Amex BCP as well, worth considering if youre good with cashback

    4. So even if you don’t go hardcode into the credit card game, I still think 2 ecosystems that compliment each other makes quite a lot of sense even for the ordinary user.

As you might know, Chase is quite weak in the grocery, gas, and misc spend categories, so those are good areas to invest in alternatives.

I think you’re right that the Gold can make sense, but also think about what MR points can do for you. As an example, maybe if you value American Airlines, then Citi might be a better alternative.

    5. Amex gold is really great if you’re able to use Rakuten as well. This card is pretty much my daily driver if I’m not chasing subs, and will be until I get a Citi strata elite.

I’ve earned about 170k points this year from Rakuten making purchases I’d make regardless.
