Hey! Im really hoping to get some guidance.

About 4 months ago I went to a doctor's appointment, lomg sorry short I discovered the hospital was not in network and I owed them money.

I was prompted to set up a payment plan for 1200 dollars and I did, I had paid about 700 dollars of it when it suddenly went up by 1000 dollars. I did not receive any email or physical mail to explain why. So I called the billing department several times and went to voice mail and never received a call back.

Yesterday I received a check in the mail from the hospital for 929 dollars with no letter or explanation. Then I finally went to the hospital and asked about my bill, they were not helpful in the slightest. They said that apparently me agreeing to a payment plan meant that I was agreeing to a third party buying my debt so now the hospital cant really see anything about it and hand to submit somthing. So now I'm waiting for a response next week. Any ideas? TYIA!

What do I do with a check from a hospital.

Sounds like they didn’t honor your payment plan.

So you paid on it, have payment proof, before you completed the total, amount you paid, you suddenly got a higher balance notice, got refunded what you did pay? Then found out it was sent to collections?

You should document your attempts and report it to your states AG. Please report this to your states AG.

In some states it’s illegal for some hospitals and providers to even collect payment from you without offering to see if you’re eligible for financial assistance. Most places also send you a collection letter and call before selling it to a third party debt. Also in some states they have to call you and tell you, that you are out of net work and suggest getting an network case agreement before going to see your provider, because it’s meant to cover their butts for a various of reasons.

At the end of the day it’s probably gonna be something dumb, like they closed the wrong account (you) when it was someone else’s account under review. A lot of hospitals and offices are now using third party revenue companies, such as RCM R1, and the hiring standards and criteria (like certs and education) are not required like of the job was locally in the US.
