hi all! first time posting here, but read the rules and using the suggested template.
- Current cards:
- AmEx card associated with my parent’s account, only used when I am making a purchase on behalf of them
- United Explorer card (Chase)
- FICO Score: 790+
- Oldest account age: 15 years
- Income: $150K+
- Average monthly spend and categories (very rough estimate):
- dining: $500
- groceries: $400
- gas: $100
- travel: depends on month, could be anywhere from $0-$1000, depending what I’ve been saving for. all of this spend goes on my travel card.
- gym: $179 (orangetheory in HCOL area)
- shopping: rarely shop, so wildly inconsistent
- pet/chewy: $150 (shout out to my dog on expensive prescription food)
- Open to Business Cards: No
- What's the purpose of your next card? Looking for a basic cash back card. I don’t want to pay an annual fee for this card, since I pay one for my other card (and find that worth it). I am mainly looking for it as a back up card to have.
- Do you have any cards you've been looking at? been looking at a few different cash back cards, like the Bank of America card. Honestly a little overwhelmed though!
- Are you OK with category spending or do you want a general spending card? Open for ideas here, but I don’t like having to select a category each quarter. Would prefer consistency in category spending over anything else. Happy to shift one category (ex: grocery or gas) to cashback exclusively if it makes sense. Please note though that I almost exclusively fill up at costco for gas so if that’s the category I should shift, it has to be a Visa card.
- other: I pay my balance off each month, so APR doesn’t matter to me. I also already have bank apps for US Bank and Chase, so would prefer to not download a third banking app, but that’s not a deal breaker either.
tldr: looking for cashback card recommendation as back up card.

Imo, WF active cash, Fidelity Visa if you invest with Fidelity, Citi Double Cash, or TD Double Up.
Of these, WF active cash has the easiest signup bonus—$200 if you spend $500 within 3 months
If you exclusively buy gas at Costco, or at least a strong majority of the time, you could get the Costco Visa card. Its earning categories are lackluster compared to most other specialized cards, but it would be a nice catch all for travel (3%), dining (3%) as well as the 5% for Costco gas (4% for non-Costco gas).
Bank of America is also really solid, and even more so if you’re willing to hold at least $25k in total assets (including retirement), but ideally at least $100k. The Preferred Rewards boost is no joke. Their cards with that boost can be some of the most powerful out there. You can then choose your next highest category spend to get 3% (6% for the first year) like online retail to cover the Chewy purchases plus any kind of streaming etc.
There’s also a few other options out there, if you have Verizon for phone service their card through Synchrony is a no-brainer with several 4% categories (gas, groceries, and restaurants) plus a huge autopay discount.
