I sold my home in November 2025. I did not realize that my home insurance was not canceled by my mortgage company. Is there a way to get a refund for the last six months?

What did the insurance company give as the reason not to pro-rate the last payment and refund the unused portion?

I know I can get credit with car insurance if I sell the car and inform the insurance company.

Yes. If the insurance company sends you a check directly as opposed to refunding the mortgage company, put the check back in your escrow account (if it was escrowed) to keep it balanced.
They will backdate the payment to when you sold the home, no telling the time period though. Usually 7-10 business days.

Only the Insured can cancel the insurance. Contact your insurance agent/company, they may ask you to sign something and provide evidence that you sold the property. The closing cover letter from the escrow company will do; it needs to show the property address and closing date.
