We had a Marketplace plan through Blue Cross NC, but it got terminated after a missed payment. We tried to reenroll through a Special Enrollment Period, but Marketplace denied it because they said losing coverage due to non-payment isn’t a qualifying life event. We also had applied for Medicaid before Marketplace for our baby and got denied because our income is apparently too high. Now Blue Cross says we can’t get coverage again until open enrollment unless we have a qualifying life event.
We can technically add the baby to his dad’s work insurance, but it would cost an extra $1,500/month which we absolutely cannot afford, which is why we originally went through the Marketplace route. Has anyone dealt with this before or know of any options for getting coverage for a child outside open enrollment? My baby has ongoing medical care, so waiting is really stressful, and we’re already racking up a lot of medical bills even with the financial assistance program through his healthcare network. I feel so lost.
Baby is currently uninsured and we feel stuck

You’re going to have to add the baby to dads or wait until November for healthcare.gov open enrollment.
Can you find a job? Even one that is opposite Dad’s. If you keep it long enough to get insurance even if you quit that’s an event that can trigger a special enrollment period. Or Dad gets a second job with better insurance or you possibly move to another state.
Edit to add: I’m sorry you’re dealing with this and postpartum and a sick baby. This country sucks
CHIP has higher income limits and I think you can enroll at any time.
If you don’t have resolution, be sure to ask healthcare providers for the cash price and get on a payment plan.
