I am very confused about these dates

The payment due date on my card is may 16th and the statement closes on may 22nd. Autopay is for some reason on june 6th which i do believe is far past the due date. I was under the impression that autopay prevents late payments and interest from happening and that the statement closing date WAS the due date. Also, the app is not very helpful, saying "payment not required at this time" despite the due date apparently being tomorrow. It is a miracle I havent missed a payment yet. Also this is an amex card and im using the amex app. Please help me understand this i am mad stoopid.
