    Victim of a scam. Social engineered into transferring my crypto in a fraud.

    I’m in the UK. Someone impersonated to be the police and then someone else impersonated to be from a crypto platform and asked me to transfer my crypto to a wallet (that turned out to have been compromised) in a long con. Long story short, it was very elaborate and I felt for it. I lost a five figure sum. I’ve already reported it to the police. Reported it to the crypto platform as well. Haven’t heard back.

    What else can I do?

    EDIT: I know the funds are gone I’m just asking if there’s anything else I can do.

      Just curious because this is the sort of thing my 78 year old grandad falls for.

      I recommend you to inform the authorities ASAP also. For future always never trust anyone contacting you. Verify, and even protect yourself at all times. Let’s hope there is something to be done before the funds go into a mixer.

      Sorry to hear this, I had the same call a while back

      Well I assume so anyway

      Guy from x police force said they had found a clone of my ID whilst investigating the laptop of someone involved in crime xyz along with seed phrase info etc

      He read me out my driving licence number so that confirmed it’s floating around somewhere along with my old mobile number

      Was pretty convincing (well until he started asking me if I had any accounts with any cryptocurrency exchanges)

      If someone calls you like this in future, never give any more information as it’s always a fishing expedition for more snippets of info

      The funds are unfortunately gone, you need to write them off in your mind, but report to the police and see if you can at least track where they went, there’s a 1% chance they got sloppy

      I rotated *everything* after this (including phone, socials, email, HW wallets etc) and recommend you do the same

      Check your credit report monthly as your details will trickle down to someone who will use them for more traditional fraud, opening bank loans etc in your name

      Why do so many fall for crypto platforms giving you a call. You will never get that kind of quality of a service. Sorry for your loss OP :/

      Who even answers their phone these days? If I don’t know number there is zero chance I’m picking up and I run a business so get called all the time.

      If you lose your assets in a crypto scam, they’re gone, like completely gone. You’re not the first person they scammed and you won’t be the last person.

      If they do get caught fund recovery is insanely hard to track because they launder their money back.

      Asking if there’s anything else you can do is just getting you ridiculed and susceptible to further scams. If you truly want to do something, watch some YouTube videos, or read a guide and educate yourself about the potential scams so this doesn’t happen in the future because it is a very common and easy one to recognise.

      Let this be a lesson to you and everyone reading this:

      Never ever give more information out to anyone over the phone or online. Even if you think they are a proper authority. Always request an in person meeting, and if police are involved always say you want your legal representation involved before discussing anything further with the police.

      I didn’t even trust my bank enough to give them my social security over the phone, and I called them! Said I’d rather go in person to close the account.
