Nasdaq IR Intelligence’s Rich Pontillo on Oil Prices & the IPO Market

we got crude oil firming back up
venturing into the mid 80s again joining
us from the NASDAQ IR intelligence team
rich pontillo is a senior director
    watching Commodities thinking about
geopolitics Rich welcome to the show
tell me about how you take geopolitical
inputs and commodity inputs into what
    you do at the
NASDAQ yeah good afternoon Oliver thanks
um so basically really I think there’s a
    there’s a balancing act that’s going on
right now at the price of O right if you
look at going back to uh really last
fall all the unfortunate events uh in
Israel uh really the risk premium do uh
did not was not rewarded into the price
of oil uh many were anticipating that we
would see an uptick in in oil prices
following that event uh all throughout
the fall into the winter time it really
did not uh materialize so I think really
now uh you’ve seen oil prices actually
do fairly well this year up about 11 12%
thus far um you know really the the the
oil Market it is evaluating a number of
    factors geopolitical events within the
Middle East really it comes down to Iran
    if any
Supply uh is disrupted out of that that
major producer of course also as well
Russia and Ukraine uh that has uh that
stretched out a bit more uh longer there
but I think the market started to get uh
comfortable with with how that might be
impacting oil prices yeah seems like it
maybe a big uh big Bond selloff too had
a way of refocusing our attention
uh away from some of this stuff do you
think that uh as a contributor to
volatility over the last couple weeks
    these factors these commodity or
    geopolitical factors are are lingering
in a way that could actually impact the
way companies think about like going
public or Capital markets do you think
there’s that level of of fear
Rich uh I think potentially again that
    that’s always a component that I think
uh privates that are looking uh to
possibly go public are about valuating
among a number of other factors um the
price of oil tends to be you know maybe
a tertiary component there but um
    certainly from from a from
a risk perspective there are uh
    certainly geopolitical components and
how that affects uh the equity markets
and in turn of course you know a
    healthier uh Equity Market certainly
tends to stimulate more uh more uh more
public uh sponsorships what about energy
companies themselves I mean always nice
to have crude oil going up and commodity
prices generally going up but is there a
lot of like uh pent up small to midsize
emerging businesses in the in the world
of old energy that uh are are looking to
go public or are um you know on the uh
kind of Cutting Edge the way we think
about tech are there any energy
companies looking at this going hey this
    is a great backdrop for
us you know really not as many as maybe
there were a decade ago uh it was very
different time time back then versus
what it is now the industry is a bit
more mature at least domestically from a
producer perspective um and also with
the ushering in of the energy trans
transition over the last couple years EV
    adoption Alternatives um certainly those
are the areas where there might be some
    interest from uh initial public
offerings more in the alternative space
solar Renewables Etc but some of the
kind of traditional oil and gas you’ve
seen that industry become a bit more
    mature
    you’re seeing consolidation within the
public um and so I think that’ll
probably be more of the uh of the road
going forward for at least traditional
long gas okay right now crude oil uh
staying firm pretty uh cozy in this mid
80s uh Rich thanks for for the chat
we’ll chalk some more energy with you
again senior director at NASDAQ IR
    intelligence
