German government spokesperson Steffen Seibert criticised Russia over detentions following the protests calling on the Russian authorities to release opposition figure Alexei Navalny. Seibert spoke at the Federal Government press conference in Berlin on Monday.

Seibert stressed, “unfortunately, another example of the extremely problematic way of dealing with dissidents in the Russian Federation.”

He also reiterated the request made by the German authorities “to release Mr Navalny immediately and to fully clarify the circumstance of the chemical weapon attack attempt on his life that took place in Russian soil.”

The spokesman said that German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas discussed the issue and the possible sanctions at the meeting in Brussels.

“There is no direct connection between the Navalny case and the Nord Stream 2. The chancellor spoke here last week and nothing has changed so far”, Seibert stated.
