Google unveils ‘mind-boggling’ quantum computing chip | BBC News

Google has unveiled a new chip which it claims takes five minutes to solve a problem that would currently take the world’s fastest super computers ten septillion – or 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years – to complete.

The chip is the latest development in a field known as quantum computing – which is attempting to use the principles of particle physics to create a new type of mind-bogglingly powerful computer.

Google says its new quantum chip, dubbed “Willow”, incorporates key “breakthroughs” and “paves the way to a useful, large-scale quantum computer.”

However experts say Willow is, for now, a largely experimental device, meaning a quantum computer powerful enough to solve a wide range of real-world problems is still years – and billions of dollars – away.

    1. Good lord, why do presenters need to be stupid? I'm not saying she needs to understand the topic areas she presents, but to be able to grasp the concept requires very little in the way of brain power. "Ok, normally a 1 and a 0 exist separate from one another. This thing can coax 1s and 0s to share the same space. Ok, that sounds interesting. Presumably, it allows it to do calculations much faster, judging by the piece I read out a moment ago. Tell us more." Perhaps she'd benefit from an upgrade to an Intel 4004.

    2. The only ones who will be able to afford this will be corporations like big pharma, who are not gonna use it to bring down costs. It's gonna be to raise profits. When are common folk gonna get something back? NEVER. The answer is never.

    3. If this chip proves itself, US intelligence should put a lock on this technology. This is where you left off 40 years ago, when the US had a GLOBAL grip on computer technology and software. They had strict parameters on WHO could access to the technology. Given the promise of this chip, it could create havoc in the free world.

    4. Mind boggling. It may sound off topic but I chanced on this cool translator that does everything and more of what a translator should have, name is Immersive Translate and one thing that can really help is it’s new feature, which lets you create a custom AI expert for translating anything. Thank me later, it's gold.
