How Russia uses its gas as a weapon | Sergei Erofeev

Russian gas exports via Soviet-era pipelines running through Ukraine came to a halt on New Year’s Day, marking an end to decades of Russian dominance over Europe’s energy markets.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has declared the halt of Russian gas transit through Ukraine as one of Russia’s “biggest defeats,” accusing Moscow of weaponizing energy and resorting to blackmail.

So what happens to the countries who were previously supplied through this pipeline?

To explore this and related questions, host Ashim Kumar was joined by Sergei Erofeev, a sociologist with Rutgers University.

    1. Well the Soviets had Atomic blackmail to take over European countries the first time. The West just *let it happen*. NOW they have tried Gas blackmail and, oops,. Nope!

    2. He was only able to use it as a blackmail weapon because there are those gullible or corrupt enough to be blackmailed. If democracies ceased trade with dictatorships then this dangerous problem could be avoided.

    3. To maintain the competitiveness of European industry there's no viable alternative to Russian energy and industrial raw materials. Germany in particular as the industrial heartland and primary economy of Europe knows this all too well, and will struggle to keep flagship industries from relocating to Asia, or being purchased by Asian competitors going forward without access to Russian energy, that's probably why the Nord Stream 2 pipeline hasn't been decommissioned.

    4. The Russian beef producers are not happy either. Cows are being taken and small local abattoirs closed. Why ?🤔
It is not worth keeping cows for some. Will this reduce milk production?

    5. Russia never blackmailed anyone. ukraine blackmailed some countries that they will stop transit if they do not get what they want. Russia always held its parts in any gas or oil contract

    6. It was Europe's decision to stop using Russian gas. USA gas is 4x more expensive, EU /German economy is finsihed. A strong EU economy based on cheap Russian raw material is not the interest of the USA.

    7. Slovakia and Hungary have not been stopped from using Russian gas.
Russian gas, has just been stopped, being transferred through Ukraine.
Slovakia and Hungary can still buy it direct and get it shipped to themselves around Ukraine.
No one is stopping Slovakia and Hungary doing anything.

    8. Ukraine, with U.S. support, blackmailing the EU regarding Russian gas transport. The EU should immediately cease collaboration with Ukraine. The EU is under attack and must fight for its existence.

    9. The simple truth is Europe does not even need NATO had their idiotic leaders not allowed themselves to be used by the USA regime and make Russia their enemy, just because the USA regime has dreams of geopolitical supremacy in Europe! Had they have brains, balls and spine, Europe would still be peacefully trading with Russia and getting cheap Russian energy for European industries!

    10. If Russia weaponises its energy supply against EU, the USA regime would not need to destroy the Nordstream pipelines! Oh, this idiot really thinks it's the Russians who blast their own Nordstream pipelines! 😂💩🤡

    11. EU will be the new Global South under Ursula, but they all deserve it! EU even gave her a second term to complete her mission to make the EU economy in tatters, in tatters! 😂🤣
