Dan – Americans pay for the American tariffs through buying the products from the country being tariffed, the Chinese pay for the tariff on American goods – the idea being to put people off buying the product and look for local alternatives – its all isolationist and what's not being said is the US has been pushing those countries to hold US bonds and debt which is designed to offset the trade deficit and provide dollars to pay for the debt – take that away and there is no need to hold US debt so selling high levels of US debt will mean no one buys future bonds – that will destroy the capital needed to build those hypothetical factories
