My mum in particular isn’t tech friendly so has kept all DVDs and lovessss picking one to watch. I still have my DVDs too but got caught out on subscriptions. I personally have decided to cancel all subscriptions for half a year so we can only have 6 months max of subs for example I may have signed up to Stan for 3 months while watching a TV show I can’t buy then cancel then a few months later I did 3 months of Netflix to watch some docos and now cancelled and that’s it for the year. Who else is moving back to DVDs? It’s been amazing to not be stuck with decision fatigue and actually own things again. Next year we will only allow ourself 3 months total for the year for subs
How many of you are cancelling subscriptions and going back to DVDs?

I rarely watch TV. Don’t have one. I have Apple TV as part of my $20/month sub that gets me Apple Music and iCloud storage. Occasionally watch. I’ll watch some stuff on YT, but it’s mostly short stuff. I read and listen to radio/podcasts.

25p-50p each individually from charity shops. Less in bulk. I like having physical media and don’t use subscriptions.
I have gotten the Hulu (99¢/month) and Peacock ($20/year) Black Friday deals for the last few years. The price is so low I don’t feel guilty if I don’t watch much.
Made my own streaming service on Fandango at home
No monthly fee because it’s a library for titles you own
No password sharing restrictions so my whole family can use the account
Almost 7,000 movies and 600 complete tv series
The Office is one of my favorite binge shows, but I don’t have the streaming service it’s on. I looked at getting it but there wasn’t anything else I wanted to stream so it seemed like a real waste of money. I just bought the full series on DVD and popped in disc one, made me feel so good.
I’ve used my family’s streaming services and as they’ve restricted password sharing I’ve decided not to get them myself, and will only keep the ones included in my phone plan (Netflix and Apple TV+ right now). I also just pulled my old wavy dvd racks out of the attic, they look great!
I only subscribed to Netflix to watch Cobra Kai and a few specific movies. Canceled as soon as I was done. I have ~20 TV series on DVD and tons of movies. Maybe a couple hundred.
I just get free dvd rentals from my local library
DVD?! No – If anything i’d rather just watch great scenes on youtube
I love streaming services. $8-10 per month for a huge collection of movies, TV shows, and documentaries on demand is a great deal, in my opinion. It’s also fun to talk with friends and coworkers about what they’re currently watching on Netflix or another streaming service. I’m also a minimalist and don’t want to find the space to put a bunch of DVDs. To each their own though!
My brother is on our family plan for his phone with unlimited WiFi and hotspot – he avoided paying for any subscriptions and WiFi too by just hooking up to his hotspot if needed and then got a bunch of DVDs at garage sales. He had the whole office series and few other of his favorite tv shows and a ton of movies. He saved hella money this way.
I cut out all my subscriptions and I get DVDs out from the library.
I had Paramount, but no one was watching it, so I just canceled it earlier this month. It ended today and zo didn’t watch one thing since the cancelation. If I want to watch “something”, I can do so for free on Pluto and Tubi, but I am much, much more a book person and usually listen rather than read, unless I own the physical book. I read/listen to books via Hoopla, Libby, TuneIn (premium for $99/year so I can listen to NHL games, the audio books are a bonus), and Everand (using their old, no longer available to new subscribers annual subscription of $85/year; if they ever get rid of that and force me into their new $15/month plan, I’ll drop it).
I’ve been considering it. I’m an extreme minimalist though so it’s hard to find the right balance. If my partner and I move in together he might get a PlayStation we can also watch dvds on so in that case I would pick out a few favourites to have on hand. I own a lot of movies on iTunes already so I don’t have subscriptions except for Spotify. But I realize Apple could remove those rights of the digital copies at anytime so it would be nice to not have to worry about that.
We have both but I have definitely added to my dvd collection lately. Certain shows that I like would be moved around or on a service that didn’t offer enough for me to justify a subscription.
I watch youtube and the free channels that are available.
Blu rays…HD content is just better.. But yes.
I never gave up DVDs. I do some streaming using Black Friday deals or during the Amazon Prime $1/mo sales. It also helps to rotate through streaming services and binge watch stuff on one service then move on to another service. I have a bunch of movies & TV series that I enjoy rewatching (especially Halloween & Christmas movies) so I have a collection of favorites that I can watch anytime the mood strikes. For one time watches, I can borrow DVDs from the library or use Hoopla/Kanopy library streaming services. I also prefer DVDs because steaming services often remove movies or TV shows and sometimes they edit them. Many movies & TV shows aren’t available on streaming and get phased out on DVD so it’s good to buy them when they’re available. It’s especially hard to find certain classic movies on DVD. I’ve waited to buy some of them when they were available and regretted waiting when they were no longer available later. I also like that I don’t have to rely on a working internet collection to watch DVDs like I do for streaming so it’s a great option when the internet goes down.
We have only one subscription that we split with family, so our share is low. The rest of the shows we watch are free.
We have a lot of DVDs that we watch and we do one streaming service at a time. Then disconnect and pick another one.
We also have a ton of CDs and we both have 2011 cars with five CD changers. We listen to the CDs at home as well.
I just recently cut way back on streaming and have added Kanopy. I either will rent DVDs from my library or pick up free ones that are being given away.

DVDs/Blu Rays/4K over streaming every time
We are. Looking to cut the cord, put up an antenna and treasure hunt in thrift stores to rebuild our DVD library.
I also set up Hoopla from my library to stream movies and TV free.
I have both and I honestly prefer DVDs….way easier to find old movies.
We have a bunch of DVDs but pretty much stopped watching them when we got streaming platforms.
Then As more and more streaming platforms came around and the options for available shows and films on each got smaller and smaller, we started watching some of our saved electronic films instead.
Most DVDs and blue ray discs come with an e-copy on the disc that we saved to our home server.
Some of our older DVDs don’t have the electronic version so we hooked up one of the gaming systems to our TV and watched a film last weekend.
We will probably do this more often as the selection on the streaming platforms get smaller.
I (65F) saved my favorite music on my CDs. Thank goodness because I use them all the time now in my 15 yo Bosch CD stereo/radio. Sounds great.
Firestick is free…..
I cancelled all of my subscriptions two years ago and have not looked back. I watch a lot of DVDs from the local library, new and old movies.
Pretty much just YouTube here. They have tons of movies and old classics and old never seen ones. They’ve really upped their content and it’s free 🎉🎉🎉 and you are probably already paying for internet. I have a cheep Amazon fire tv and I watch all the free stuff and PBS.
There are many free streaming services and my friend has bunch of movies and other video content loaded to the free Jellyfin server. So we can watch a ton from there. It’s an option if you want to upload your dvds to a server.
With that being said though, I haven’t been able to let go of my Netflix or Xfinity cable. Thankfully, I have Hulu free in my sub with my TMobile phone service, which some areas give you Netflix. I wish mine did. With my Amazon Prime shipping, I also have my prime video.
I do have all my dvds and blu-ray discs plus players in the house (even some VHS tapes but forgot and donated the player!). It is nice to just pull those out every now and then, but for convenience sake, it’s much easier to just pull up on the server.
Happy watching!
We never left DVD/BluRay no subscriptions.
I’ve never paid for a streaming subscription. I never left my dvds and blurays.
I rip them to my local media server and put the discs in a box.
I haven’t paid for streaming in like 4 years. I’ve been collecting dvds and cds for years.
The ad version(free) of Amazon is actually pretty good and I use their live stream TV. But other than that I’ve never had subscription service. I use a only YouTube, Tubi, and Pluto. Pretty much all free.
I actually watch a lot of ABC iview and SBS on Demand. There’s some really interesting shows on there and plenty of movies on the World movies channel as well.
