I currently have an iPhone 8, and since Apple no longer updates it, I need to get it replaced eventually. With the expected iPhone 17 launch in September, I've been watching prices. I can afford to go as high as $500 for a new phone in cash, but I would rather not spend that much. I'm willing to go with a 14 base model, and I'm seeing them available for $300 right now (locked to my current carrier, StraightTalk). But I wonder if it would be worth it to wait until after the launch, hoping they will continue to discount that model, or even bring the iPhone 15 down below $500. The other problem is I'm torn between the 14 and 15 because I'm not sure I feel like converting our household to USB-C for chargers (husband has an iPhone 12). Thoughts?

Have you looked into getting the iphone 16e? It is right around that $400 used on ebay and you could probably even find it cheaper on marketplace. With that you will get a newer phone with the USB-C and get a few more years of updates out of it than if you were to do the 14.
There’s a decent chance the 16e goes below $500 after the new phone comes out
Does your phone currently work? Are apps no longer compatible?

Phones depreciate, get the max life out of the one you currently have THEN you worry about getting a newer one.
There’s a great website back market …. They sell used iPhones.
I would wait for the 15 to drop in price. I like having usb-c because of how many other products already use it. My wife and daughter still have iPhones with lightning chargers so I just kept mine as back ups for them. Plus you’ll have software support longer getting a newer model.
