Noticed some fraudulent transactions from Amazon.
I reported it to Chase and they cancelled my old card and sent me a new one.
But Amazon was updated immediately with the new number! So what was the point of the new card. Whoever added my old card to their Amazon account can just use the new one now without ever needing to steal the new number.
What's the point of a new credit card number if vendors are updated right away?

When I had a card replaced, I told the bank not to keep any vendor links to old card.
You have to ask them to stop the updater before replacing the card. Once the replace button is clicked, the whole process of updating already began.

The account updater service is for recurring/card on file merchants. Cards expire or are lost without any fraud, so the service prevents having to update them manually.
When your type of fraud is present, you should request your bank not update.
Merchants pay a pretty penny for this. At a previous company I worked for, we hooked into this and would only do it at a last resort due to how pricey, it was to get your new card number.
They do it for recurring revenue as they see it’s easier and cheaper than having you re-enter your card.
