Hi Reddit,

I hired an accountant to help me with my tax refund because my situation is complicated.

    I'm a disabled freelance artist.

They did my form and the balance that I owe is way more than I expected. I keep asking to have a meeting so that I can understand it more but they keep disregarding my requests.

Now they billed me about $900. I'm stumped about what to do at this point. Should I just eat the loss and submit my tax? Should I insist on meeting? Should I just pay them and find another accountant?

I don't have a lot of money and the tax fund I put aside isn't enough for this year.

You should not submit taxes if you don’t understand the results. You should not pay a tax preparer who is unable or unwilling to discuss the results with you.

Never sign nor file a tax return that you don’t understand.

As to whether or not you should pay the first accountant, that ultimately depends on the terms agreed to between you and them – but either way – find a new tax professional who is willing to explain what you do or don’t owe and why.

    3. You’ll have to pay for the work regardless if you use them or not, or it’s going to collections to rape your credit score.

    4. Definitely meet before releasing for filing if you aren’t able to look it over yourself and understand the results.

The flow of a tax return is straightforward enough that your preparer should be able to walk through what’s on each schedule, and this is your opportunity to evaluate for errors, misunderstandings, or omitted info.
