Hello. I got accepted for a new position recently, and the primary relevant job experience I put down was tech support for a small local business. The background check service is asking me to verify w-2 documents and tax documents, but I was never officially paid during my time there because I was just helping a family member. I received a handwritten check for like $200-300 like 2 times but that was it. How should I respond to the verification request and/or what documents can I provide?

Need help specifying volunteer work that I was occasionally paid for

    1. Not really a tax question, as you said, you never did anything with taxes for the job.

You need to talk to the background checker and they in turn get instructions from their customer, the potential new employer. You could try to frame it as an unpaid internship and see what process the background checker has for that. They may accept some kind of affidavit-like note.
Worse case is they will just note the issue and their inability to verify, and the employer will decide if it’s a deal-breaker. If you were truthful about the nature of the resume entry during the interview process, it hopefully won’t be an issue.
